The Tool

what the evidence supports

Upload a photograph of a piece and it will be read against the reference sources — period, origin, marks, construction — on the same confidence tiers the rest of this practice uses. It states what the evidence supports and where it stops. Free — one analysis without an account, and more signed in.

The Custodian can take this further — what the marks would settle, what the record holds on this maker or period, where the evidence stops. It will arrive knowing what the Tool read, and it answers from the published corpus rather than from a photograph.

A separate free allowance from the Tool's, and it takes about a minute to answer.
What the Tool will not do

It does not certify authenticity or appraise for insurance, and it will not tell you to test a piece yourself — a solvent, a scratch or a file belongs with a conservator, not with someone holding something they cannot replace. It reads one photograph, so a mark it cannot see is recorded as not visible rather than assumed. Any figure it gives is an indicative range for a class of object, not a sale it looked up. It reads the practice’s own published corpus and names the records it read; it does not visit the reference sites, and nothing on this page is fetched from them.
